Transgender people constitute a marginalised minority, present in virtually all societies, in all parts of the world. Their marginalisation is often accompanied by persecution, discrimination, humiliation, ridicule, exclusion, and often violence. Unlike many other marginalised minorities in developing and transitional countries, their numbers are very few, with estimates ranging from 0.25% to 1%
The larger society often will not tolerate transgender people’s efforts to be authentic to their own Gender identity consciousness. Executive Director of IGLHRC Carey Johnson welcomed the decision, saying it was an affirmation that the voices of LGBT people have a place at the UN as part of a vital civil society community: “The clear message here is that these voices should not be silenced and that human rights cannot be denied on the basis of sexual orientation or Gender identity.”
