It is summer, and raining in Cape Town - unheard of! It might have to be part of this whole global warming thing. I also believe it can be connected to the fact that not only for the first time Cape Town Pride festival had a poetry reading, book fair - something for the intellect on it's programme, but also because transgender folk was well presented!

The afternoon started in a relaxed atmosphere with some poets reading their poetry to a group of 25 people who purely came to hear some good poetry. There after people started mingling and could browse through the books, available for sale. As the afternoon proceeded, there came more and more people, to the point that we were all together just about 70 people!

ImageAs one of the poet readers, Sam, who is also on our forum read some of her awesome poetry, not afraid to share some of her life experiences and journey to all at present. Her selection of poems was well chosen and very popular with the people. Her work was on sale, and well supported. Anne Jayne Kuipers were also present, and copies of her book were on sale.

Needless to say, in the audience was more trans folk, than the average guests realised! I am very proud of the brave people who attended this fine event, and took that one step forward to be part of a larger, more visible community - claiming with confidence their space...and as Sam closed of with her speech: " ...and just love us!"
