Anne starts her story with her wartime birth in Holland, her childhood years and the first discovery of her own being. We are introduced to her family and friends as well as those who help to form her perspective of herself. We learn that she qualified as an architect, designed award-winning projects, married twice and fathered two children (with whom she maintains a good relationship). The reader discovers her move to South Africa where she lectured at the University of Cape Town, work with architectural firms and designed building we can now see in the Western Cape. Anne served on the Franschhoek Council and acquired a high profile position with the Cape Town City Council, which she still holds today. We also get to know the person Anne, her feelings and her secrets. At the age of fifty-four, with most of her obligations fulfilled, Anne felt that she was ready to take the final steps in her change.

If you are looking for a story on the gory details of a man, doing something drastic to become a woman, then this book is not for you. This rather, is the story of a woman, who did what she had to do, to find happiness and fulfilment. For Anne Kuipers freedom could not be bought by applying the rules of convention, she had to follow her heart and make her own sacrifices to find it for herself. This was my very first transexual book I've got to read, and I enjoyed it very much. Very well balanced book.
