Western society is characterised by a constant search for one’s ‘identity’. This search is premised on the idea that there is such a thing to be found – that one’s ‘identity’ exists as a universal and timeless core of the self that all persons possess. Identification of oneself as either a male or a female has been established as a foundation stone of this self-identity. I found out that one of my colleagues at work lived with a male-female transsexual. I had seen Shaun(a) before but I had never thought to use the idea.
