First Trans Health And Advocacy Conference in Africa PDF Print E-mail
First Trans Health and Advocacy Conference In Africa

Great interest is being shown in the upcoming Trans Health and Advocacy Conference to be hosted by Gender DynamiX. Following the very successful Trans Health and Research Conference held in November 2010 in Hout Bay, Gender DynamiX will be following up with the first African Regional Trans Health and Advocacy Conference to be held from 25th to 28th November 2011.

A number of international speakers are expected with the keynote address delivered by Dr Anita Radix (MD), Director of Research and Education, Callen-Lorde Community Health Centre, New York. Other main speakers include Jamison Green (PhD), Chairperson, World Professional Association for Trans Health (WPATH), JoAnne Keatly (MSW) Director of Excellence for Transgender Health - Pacific AIDS Education and Training Centre Minority Programs UCSF, Sel Hwahng (PhD) Board Member IGLHRC and Rosemary Coates (PhD) President, WPATH. Representatives of the SA National Department of Health (NDOH) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) are also expected to make an appearance.

In addition the participation of the Department of Education, Department of Health and the World Health Organisation has also been confirmed.

Also part of the programme, a satellite session with the World Associationof Sexual Health will take place on 26th November at the conference venue - the Upper East Side Hotel in Woodstock.

There is great interest being shown with over a hundred registrations and conference applications. There will be a peer review of abstracts and Gender DynamiX is pleased to note that exciting abstracts have been submitted. This conference has an explicit research focus and has identified two clear focus areas: To educate Health Care Professionals on service provision to TG people; and to explore Indigenous Knowledge and communication in relation to TG persons. This was further broken down into four tracks for the submission of abstracts which will be presented on the first day (26th November) of the conference. These include:

1.    Indigenous knowledge
2.    Access to health
3.    Sexual and Reproductive health issues
4.    HIV

The second day of the conference will address research translation and information sharing and will explore advocacy and policy options.

Panellists include Akram Kubanychbekov, Board Member – Trans Initiative Group, Chris Dolan (PhD0, Director Refugee Law Project, Gerrit Maritz, National Programme Officer, HIV Prevention – United Nations Population Fund, He-Jin Kim, Fundraiser, Gender DynamiX, Liesl Theron, Hons, Executive Director, Gender DynamiX and Marlene Wasserman, DHS, Sexologist.
